Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Wyoming County economy with 50% of businesses having one to four employees. Therefore, an economic development strategy that focuses on existing businesses can be very effective. Studies even show that 40% to 80% of new jobs are created by existing businesses, which have proved their ability to last. Working with existing local businesses gives the biggest benefits for the least cost.
By working with existing businesses in Wyoming County, the BRE&D program works to determine the key issues facing local businesses and develops strategies and partnerships to overcome these issues. Furthermore, the BRE&D program works as an information repository to help answer questions that businesses may have in a wide variety of areas. The BRE&D program can refer local businesses and creative entrepreneurs to the specific resources that they need in order to enhance their enterprise.
Finally, the BRE&D program works closely with artisans, handcrafters, and other creative entrepreneurs in Wyoming County to help them turn their traditional or unique products into a viable business. Through facilitating the development of these creative businesses, Wyoming County will lead the way in the generation of an Artisan Trail in Southern West Virginia.
